With prices rising again, finding a real discount matters more than ever. Promo codes may seem like the obvious solution, but HBO Max rarely releases them, and most pages promising 25% or 50% off lead to expired or unavailable offers. 7 Ways I Found to Get HBO Max Cheaper in 2026
I went through every route that really lowers what you pay: student verification, phone carrier perks, TV provider deals, live TV packages, retention offers, seasonal sales, and shared accounts. Some save a lot, most come with a condition.

If you are in college right now, this is the best official offer HBO Max runs. Students pay $5.49 a month for Basic with Ads instead of $10.99, a straight 50% cut, and it renews each month for up to 12 months.

3. Get an HBO Max Discount Through Your Phone Carrier
Two carriers hand you HBO Max, and if you are already a customer this is money sitting on your account page waiting to be claimed.
Cricket Wireless gives you HBO Max Basic with Ads at no extra cost on its Supreme Unlimited plan, which Cricket values at about $120 a year. You need an online Cricket account, you get one HBO Max account per Cricket account, and video on the phone plan plays in SD.
Verizon sells Netflix and HBO Max together as a $13 a month myPlan perk, covering Netflix Standard with Ads and HBO Max Basic with Ads. Verizon puts the saving at $6.98 a month. Eligible lines run from Simplicity up to Unlimited Ultimate, plus 5G Home and some Fios plans.
The Verizon route has one detail worth the click. You can upgrade the HBO Max half from inside your account: $7.50 more a month for Standard, or $12 more for Premium. That puts no-ads HBO Max plus Netflix at $20.50, which is less than HBO Max Standard on its own.
4. Get Free HBO Max With a Spectrum TV Plan
If Spectrum already bills you for TV, stop paying HBO Max twice. Stream TV Signature, Stream TV Pro and Stream TV VIP all include HBO Max Basic with Ads, and these are not trials. The app is yours for as long as you keep the plan.
- Sign in to your Spectrum account and open Services.
- Choose View Current Plan.
- If your plan qualifies, click Activate next to the HBO Max icon.

5. Get Cheap HBO Max Inside Philo Core for $33 a Month
This one surprised me. Philo Core costs $33 a month and includes HBO Max Basic with Ads, 70+ cable channels, AMC+ with ads, discovery+ with ads, 110+ free channels, and a DVR that keeps recordings for a year.
Add it up and it stops looking like a TV package. HBO Max, AMC+ and discovery+ bought on their own already use up most of that $33, so the 70 channels and the DVR come along for what is left.
It is the wrong buy if HBO Max is all you want, since $33 is triple the ad plan. It is the right buy if you were already thinking about live TV, because Philo costs far less than Hulu + Live TV for a similar job.
6. Trigger an HBO Max Retention or Win-Back Discount
HBO Max quietly pays to keep you, and this is the route I see written up least often. Two offers come up again and again from people billed directly by HBO Max.
- While you cancel: start the cancellation at hbomax.com/subscription and some accounts are shown around 50% off for 6 months on Standard before the cancel goes through.
- After you leave: people who finished cancelling have been emailed a win-back offer of no-ads Standard at $8.49 a month for 6 months, against $18.49 normally.
Be honest with yourself about this one. HBO Max only shows these offers to some accounts, so plenty of people see nothing, and neither price is published anywhere official. Treat it as a free lottery ticket you buy by clicking cancel, not as a plan.
It also only works if HBO Max bills you directly. Sign up through Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku or a carrier and there is no save offer to show you.
7. Catch the HBO Max Black Friday and Annual Sales
HBO Max discounts rarely, then discounts hard, and it does it twice a year in a pattern you can plan around.
Black Friday is the deeper one. The ad plan dropped to $2.99 a month for six months in both 2024 and 2025, around 70% off, with the 2025 window running from about November 24 to December 1.
Yearly plan sales are the other one, usually timed to a big premiere. Ahead of House of the Dragon season three, HBO Max cut all three yearly plans by 28% through July 15, 2026: $78.99 for Basic with Ads, $132.99 for Standard and $164.99 for Premium.
