As more companies bring ChatGPT into daily work, many teams are moving from separate Plus accounts to ChatGPT Business, the plan OpenAI used to call ChatGPT Team. The upgrade isn't small, though. Business costs $25 per seat each month with a two-seat minimum, which puts even the smallest team at $50 a month.
That said, you don't always have to pay full price. Startups, university labs, nonprofits, and some business cardholders can get Business for free or close to it. This guide walks through each route, whether a free trial exists right now, and the discounts worth using if you don't qualify.
If you work alone and don't fit any of those groups, the two-seat minimum is usually what stands in the way. For that, GamsGo offers two simpler options: a single Business seat from $22.99/month through its ChatGPT Pro top-up, or a ChatGPT Plus account from $5.14/month if you don't need team features.
For Business features
Single ChatGPT Business Seat
$22.99 / month
No two-seat minimum. Pay for one seat instead of $50 for two.
For personal use
ChatGPT Plus Account
$5.14 / month
GPT-6 Sol and full Plus features, without team setup.

What Is ChatGPT Business and How Much Does It Cost?
ChatGPT Business is the self-serve team plan that sits between individual plans like Plus and the sales-led Enterprise plan. OpenAI renamed it from ChatGPT Team on August 29, 2025, and only the name changed.
Pricing depends on the seat type and billing cycle:
For most small teams, the real starting cost is two Standard seats.
Every Standard and Premium seat includes GPT-6 Sol in chat, Codex, ChatGPT Work, connectors for tools like Google Drive, Slack, and SharePoint, and single sign-on. Admins get roles, spend limits, and control over which apps members can connect.
Should Your Team Use ChatGPT Business or Individual Plus Accounts?
Many small teams wonder whether a Business workspace is worth it when a Plus account is only $20. The table below shows where the two actually differ:
| Item | ChatGPT Plus | ChatGPT Business |
| Price | $20/month per person | $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, 2-seat minimum |
| Who owns the account | The individual | The company workspace |
| Training on your data | On by default, can be turned off | Off by default |
| Admin controls and SSO | None | Roles, spend limits, SAML or OIDC sign-on |
| When someone leaves | Their chats and GPTs leave with them | Projects and GPTs transfer to a workspace owner |
| Sharing | Links work for anyone who has them | Projects, GPTs, and links limited to the workspace |
In short, Plus suits individuals, while Business pays off once a second person works with company or client data.
A solo user doing personal work is usually fine on Plus, and our ChatGPT Plus review covers what that plan does well. Once two or more people handle client files or shared projects, Business is easier to manage and safer by default. For audit logs, SCIM provisioning, or custom data retention, you'll need Enterprise instead.
Is There a ChatGPT Business Free Trial?
Not a standing one. As of October 2026, OpenAI's pricing page lists no free trial or first-month offer for Business, and new workspaces pay from the first month.
OpenAI has run limited trials before, though. In mid-2025, some new workspaces could start Business (then called Team) for $1 for the first month. Offers like this appear at sign-up without notice and disappear the same way.
If no offer is showing, the cheapest official way to test Business is two Standard seats on monthly billing for $50, then cancelling before the next cycle if it doesn't fit. Before that, check the routes below, since several of them cost nothing at all.
How Can You Get ChatGPT Business for Free?
One Free Seat Through Partner Deals
Startup perk platforms say they have partnered with OpenAI on a deal that waives one Standard seat for up to 48 months, worth about $1,200. Because Business still needs two seats, this cuts a two-person workspace from $50 to $25 a month rather than to zero.
The two best-known platforms run the offer with slightly different rules:
- Efficient App: free account, verified business email required (personal Gmail or Proton addresses don't qualify), monthly billing only, available in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Germany, France, Brazil, and Colombia. Existing paid workspaces can claim it.
- FounderPass: requires a FounderPass Premium membership, a registered company with a working website, and no previous paid ChatGPT plan, with similar country limits.

Both send a one-time discount link or code after verifying your company, and both may earn a referral fee when you sign up. Efficient updated its listing in September 2026, and FounderPass re-verified its offer in October 2026.
Read the fine print before you redeem. The discount only applies to monthly billing; the free seat becomes billable when the term ends, and removing a member doesn't automatically lower your seat count.
Stripe Atlas Founder Perk
If you incorporated through Stripe Atlas, check your Atlas perks dashboard. In March 2026, Stripe Atlas announced an OpenAI perk that gives founders two free ChatGPT Business seats for two months, which covers the full minimum workspace.

The perk is meant for Atlas companies and appears in the dashboard after your Atlas application is approved. Stripe's public perks list doesn't show partner offers in detail, so the dashboard is the only reliable place to confirm it's still running.
Promo codes from this perk have circulated on social media, but using them without an Atlas company risks the discount being reversed.
Amex Business Card Credit
If your company pays with an American Express Business Platinum or Business Gold card, enroll in the card's ChatGPT Business benefit before you subscribe. Since May 2026, it returns up to $300 a year in statement credits on ChatGPT Business charges, enough to cover two monthly Standard seats for six months.
The credit applies only to those two business cards, not the personal Platinum or Gold. Enrollment happens in your Amex account, and charges made before you enroll don't count.
Limited First-Month Offers for New Workspaces
OpenAI occasionally discounts the first month for new Business workspaces, as with the $1 first-month offer in 2025. These offers show up directly on the sign-up page or through links in OpenAI emails and ads, and they usually cover a small team of up to five seats.
To catch one, start the sign-up flow at chatgpt.com/business with your work email and check the price on the checkout page before entering payment details. After the offer month, the workspace renews at the normal per-seat price, so cancel or reduce seats before then if you're only testing.
Rosalind Academic Plan for US University Labs
OpenAI's Rosalind Academic Plan gives approved academic labs at US universities up to 30 ChatGPT Business Standard seats free for 12 months, plus access to GPT-Rosalind, OpenAI's life sciences model.

The lab's principal investigator applies at chatgpt.com/rosalind/lab/application with an institutional email, describes the lab's work, and completes identity verification. A trained biosafety contact at the institution is required, a payment card is needed during setup, and approval isn't guaranteed. Applications are currently open.
ChatGPT Edu for University Teams
ChatGPT Edu is the education version of a team workspace. Universities buy it for their students and staff, so members get premium ChatGPT with admin controls and data protection at no personal cost.
It's not something you can sign up for alone. Check your university's IT pages to see whether your school already has Edu, and if it does, sign in with your school account. If you're a student looking for a personal plan instead, our guide to getting ChatGPT Plus for free covers the student and invite offers.
Is There a ChatGPT Business Discount?
Yes, though OpenAI doesn't advertise most of them. Even without a startup perk or academic approval, these options bring the per-seat cost down.
Nonprofit Discount
Through OpenAI for Nonprofits, eligible nonprofit organizations get 20% off ChatGPT Business on monthly or annual plans. Since February 2026, OpenAI has offered discounts of up to 75% on Business or Enterprise for larger nonprofit deployments through its sales team.
Apply through the validation link on the OpenAI for Nonprofits page, which confirms your nonprofit status before the discount is added to your workspace.
Annual Billing and Seat Mixing
Switching to annual billing drops a Standard seat from $25 to $20 a month, a 20% saving that most teams can use. The catch is that partner seat waivers only apply to monthly billing, so compare both before you commit.
You can also mix seat types. Give Premium seats only to the people who regularly hit limits and keep everyone else on Standard, since one Premium seat costs as much as five Standard seats. Our ChatGPT pricing guide compares Business with Plus and Pro if you're still deciding between plans.
Single Business Seat on GamsGo
If you're a freelancer or solo founder, the two-seat minimum is the biggest obstacle, because you'd pay $50 a month for one person. GamsGo's ChatGPT top-up page offers a single ChatGPT Business seat from $22.99/month, less than half the official minimum.

The seat is activated on your account, typically within a few hours, and comes with a 10-day warranty. GamsGo supports cards, PayPal, and local payment methods.
Which Free ChatGPT Business Option Is Right for Your Team?
Every route above comes with its own conditions, so here they are side by side:
Free options cover the full cost only for narrow groups, while the rest lower the bill rather than remove it.
If your company was set up through Stripe Atlas or you run a university lab, start there, since both cover the full minimum workspace at no cost. Other startups get the most from a partner seat waiver, and an eligible Amex card can cover much of the remaining seat.
Nonprofits should apply for their discount before paying for any seats, and solo users can skip the two-seat problem entirely with a single seat.
Which ChatGPT Business Offers Should You Avoid?
Because Business discounts are tied to company verification, a lot of "free Business" tips online involve bending the rules. These are the ones that can cost you the workspace:
- Disposable or fake business emails: signing up with temporary inboxes breaks OpenAI's terms, and the workspace can be shut down along with its data.
- Region workarounds: using a VPN or a fake address to claim a region-locked offer can get the discount reversed or the account closed.
- Leaked partner codes: codes issued to Stripe Atlas founders or perk-platform members are tied to those programs and can be revoked if used outside them.
- "Lifetime Business" sellers: no legitimate seller offers permanent Business access for a one-time fee.
A workspace holds your team's files, projects, and connected apps, so losing it costs far more than the seats you saved. Only redeem offers your company actually qualifies for, and sign up with a real company email.
Conclusion
OpenAI has been adding to Business every few weeks. In October alone, workspaces picked up GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, plus a Slides tool that lets teammates co-edit decks and export them to PowerPoint or Google Slides.
With features landing this fast, it will be interesting to see whether OpenAI brings back a proper free trial or relaxes the two-seat minimum for smaller teams.
Partner deals and promo windows for Business also tend to appear without warning, so GamsGo will keep tracking new offers and update this guide whenever a route opens or closes. Before you check out, here's an extra GamsGo discount you can stack on top.👇

FAQ
Can You Use ChatGPT Business With Only One Person?
Not on an official workspace. OpenAI requires at least two paid seats, so a solo user still pays for two, which is $50 a month on monthly billing. A partner seat waiver can halve that cost, while a single Business seat from a platform like GamsGo, starting at $22.99/month, avoids the minimum entirely.
Is ChatGPT Team the Same as ChatGPT Business?
Yes. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025, and only the name changed. Features, usage limits, security, and pricing all carried over, and existing contracts stayed in effect, so promo pages and guides that still say "ChatGPT Team" are describing the same plan.
Does ChatGPT Business Use Your Data for Training?
Not by default. OpenAI doesn't train its models on Business workspace data unless the workspace opts in. That's narrower than zero data retention, though, and self-serve Business doesn't include a BAA, so teams handling health records or other regulated data should look at ChatGPT Enterprise instead.
What Happens When a Free ChatGPT Business Offer Ends?
The workspace renews at the standard seat price unless you cancel or reduce seats first. Removing a member doesn't lower the number of paid seats, so schedule a seat reduction in Manage Seats before the renewal date. Reductions take effect at the start of the next billing cycle, not immediately.
Is ChatGPT Business Cheaper Than Buying Plus for Each Person?
Not on monthly billing. A Standard Business seat costs $25 a month against $20 for Plus, and the two only match at $20 per person on annual Business billing. The extra pays for admin controls, single sign-on, workspace-only sharing, and data kept out of training by default, not for a cheaper seat.
